When to clean your fish tank
Bacteria can build up quickly is your fish tank causing your fish to get sick so it is important to know when this is happening and how to fix it.
When bacteria builds up there are 3 signs
* When the water is cloudy
* The water is foamy
* If the water begins to smell worse than normal
Make sure everything that is electric is unplugged and away from the tank.
Use a bucket and a vacuum to remove approximately 20% of the water, not all of it. There is good bacteria in the water too, and we want to save that. If not it can harm your fish. You will want to do this about twice per week ideally.
After removing 20% of the water you want to remove and clean your filter. This should be done once a month.
Then after scrubbing the sides of the tank exposed and under water. Refill the tank back to the line with lukewarm water. Using cold water to refill your tank can drop the overall temperature of the water in the tank too drastically and send your fish into shock.
