Feeding Guide/FAQ

One of the biggest mistakes new fish owners make is over-feeding their fish. Here is how to avoid that while keeping your fish healthy:
1.
Generally you should be feeding your fish 2 times a day, never more than 3.
2.
Try not to put all the food in at once during a feeding to ensure that each fish has an opportunity to get to the food.
3.
Most fish eat all they can eat in about 3-4 minutes. By this time a fish should be full. If it is still eating at 5 minutes you are over feeding.
If you have a diverse variety of species and sizes of fish it is a good idea to mix up the type of food you are feeding them and to put different kinds in at different times of the day.
How do I know if I’m over feeding?
There are a couple of ways to determine this:
1.
The fish are not eating all of the food you give them.
2.
The water in the Aquarium becomes cloudy. Cloudy water is often caused by food that is not eaten. You may be giving them more than they can eat.
3.
If it has been 5 minutes since you began feeding and there is still food in the tank.
4.
If you approach the tank at the normal feeding time and the fish do not swim to the surface they are generally overfed.
5.
Ammonia Spike. Ammonia is a byproduct of waste. The more your fish eat, the more they will go. Check Ammonia levels. An abnormally high level of ammonia is a sign you are feeding them too much.
Again just because your fish seem hungry does not necessarily mean the need to be fed.
It is much easier to kill your fish by overfeeding them, than it is to starve them to death!!!
